The Great Conversation : Las Cruces - NM
The Great Conversation series provides an opportunity to engage in passionate, civil, respectful discussion about important issues ranging from current affairs to timeless human questions that affect us all. In The Great Conversation we recognize and honor common ground and contrasts. We address conflict with collaboration, cooperation and communication. We practice compassion rather than condemnation. It's passionately candid, yet safe. It's informative. It's fascinating. And it's a lot of fun!

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
For the week of Monday January 16th through Friday January 20th we'll be looking at and sharing our views about Dr. King's role and influence upon the issues we struggle with today. This weeks conversations are held in cooperation with:
The Border Servant Corp
The Las Cruces Chapter of the NAACP
New Heights Faith Community
Monday - 1/16: Was it only a Dream?
This Monday, (for those who can) we'll start a little early - at 5:30pm with a video presentation of Dr. Martin Luther King's world renowned speech: "I Have a Dream". The video and refreshments are provided courtesy of Joe Whitley of New Heights Faith Community.
"I Have A Dream"
Dr. King delivered this world renowned speech at the March on Washington DC - August 28th 1963. We'll all be treated to a reminder of King's vision and a follow up Great Conversation at 6:00pm... to discuss how as a nation we've moved toward that vision, how we haven't, and what remains to be done.I Have a Dream - Text and Audio
Tuesday - 1/17: "War"
On April 30, 1967, Dr. King delivered a speech titled:
"Why I Oppose the War in Vietnam".
Some say it was actually this speech that signed his death warrant. Now, in 2012, we live in a declared state of undeclared "Perpetual War" that's become the accepted mode of our foreign relations policies. What would the good Dr. King think of our situation today? What do you think?

Wednesday - 1/18: "Poverty"
In looking at the issue of "Poverty" let's revisit April 3rd, 1968 when Dr. King delivered his speech remembered as:
"I've Been to the Mountain Top".
As part of his work to end poverty, he was in Memphis TN to support striking sanitation workers demanding fair wages and fair treatment. That night he said "I've seen the promised land. I may not get there with you". The next day... April 4th, 1968, he was assassinated.
Where do we stand today in the elimination of poverty?
"I've Been to the Mountaintop" - text and audio.
Thursday - 1/19: "Nobel Peace Prize"
On December 10, 1964, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Dr. King was recognized worldwide for his work in civil and human rights, and the use of non-violent, civil disobedience to bring light to the darkness of human oppression.
On December 10, 2009, President Barack Obama also accepted the Nobel Peace Prize. In his speech he quoted Dr. King's acceptance speech... and went on to talk about how necessary war is. Have our values changed? Have our practices changed? Has anything changed at all?

This new schedule enables us to follow through on issues with multiple, in-depth dialogues, and expands the opportunities for more community participation and involvement. Soon, we'll have a web calendar with the full month's scheduled topics. Until then you'll receive a weekly invitation outlining the coming week's schedule. You'll occasionally see separate invitations for conversations held intermittently in other locations. The Great Conversation remains free and open to the community.
Beginning Monday, January 9th:
We follow through on issues arising from our
New Years Eve Great Conversation
"2012"
Each night is devoted to a specific and relevant issue.
New Years Eve Great Conversation
"2012"
Each night is devoted to a specific and relevant issue.
Monday - 1/9:
The Economy: What's going to happen in 2012 to our local, national and global economies? What might we expect in terms of jobs, the financial systems and economic stability. How will we respond to the impact on our local economy?
Tuesday - 1/10:
The 2012 Presidential Election: Republican - Democrat - Third Party - what do Americans really want? Does any candidate from any party have realistic solutions to the challenges we face? Are we looking at another "Lesser of Two Evils" election? With corporate mega-funding of both candidates, does it really matter who's in the White House?
Wednesday - 1/11:
The Environment: What's the heck's going on with our planet?
47 states received Federal Emergency Disaster Relief in 2011 as a result of severe weather events. How can we afford that? Are weather patterns changing? Are weather events becoming more severe worldwide? What's the impact of those events on food production and hunger? What's happening with environmental pollution, our water, our air and our oceans? What can we expect in 2012? What can we do about it?
Thursday - 1/12:
Healthcare: What does 2012 promise in regard to healthcare for our aging population? How will we deal with increasing costs and diminishing access for people of all ages? How are we going to develop a healthcare system that meets the challenges of our growing population?
Friday - 1/13:
Human and Civil Rights on The US/Mexican Border: As we approach the 2012 observance of Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday... let's look at how immigration enforcement, the drug wars, and high-tech militarization affects human and civil rights on both sides of the border.
